Otway Odyssey 2021
The Otway Odyssey is Australia’s most respected mountain biking event thanks to the quality of the single track, the challenging courses, the magnificent wilderness and the electrifying race atmosphere that welcomes any rider!
“It was a tough ride with the first 30km all an uphill climb. Within the first kilometer I had to stop to get a mask out of my derailleur which put me behind although I used some technical and fast sections to get back to the original group. With a few fast creek crossings and steep pinches, I was solo for two and a half hours.
With finally getting to some longer descents I tried to save as much energy and not push the trails too hard, at the 60km I couldn’t find my bottles in the feed zone so had to turn around and fill up. By then the cramp was taunting me constantly, I actually wanted to push harder but if I did I would immediately cramp so that was quite hard.
80kms I had finally caught a fair few riders but my gears where changing every two or three seconds which hindered my speed a lot and after riding like that for about an hour the rear wheel locked up right near the finish. I realised my axle had come loose and was out, put it back in and my bike went back to perfect operation. I feel like there where 5 to 10 mins left out there in mishaps and could have maybe ended with a much better position but all in all really happy with how I managed the race.”
